You can find a short profile on our facilitator, Feizel Mamdoo, below:

Feizel Mamdoo is filmmaker, writer and heritage, arts and culture worker.

He was born in Pageview/Vrededorp, popularly known as “Fietas”, which neighbours Fordsburg, which is part of the setting of Mac Carrim’s book. He was nine years old in 1968 when his family were forcibly moved to Lenasia under the Group Areas Act.

Feizel has a rich background in the movement for democracy in South Africa. He was instrumental in the formation of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and as part of the leadership of the revived Transvaal Indian Congress, a UDF affiliate, he was a delegate to the Congress for a Democratic South Africa (Codesa) that negotiated the end of apartheid and South Africa’s transition to a constitutional democracy. He suffered numerous bouts of detention for his activism.

Post-apartheid Feizel rekindled his interests in heritage, arts and culture and entered the film and television production industry. He developed as a noted documentary filmmaker.  He is currently writing a feature film with the support of the National Film and Video Foundation. An advocate for the independent production industry, Feizel is a past Chairperson of the South African Screen Federation (SASFED). In 2012 he was the Overall Co-chairperson of the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAS).

Feizel’s interests in arts and culture include community heritage reclamation. He is a founding director of the award winning The Fietas Festival, a community cultural initiative to reclaim the heritage of his birthplace, Fietas.
